Trim and finish carpentry
The careful, visible work that makes a room look finished: trim, custom woodwork, beetle-kill pine, floating shelves and mantels.
What Alex does
- Baseboard, casing and other trim
- Custom woodwork, like a cedar-shingled window nook and a bar ledge
- A doorway cased in Colorado beetle-kill pine
- Floating shelves and a floating mantel
Scribing
Walls and floors are rarely flat or plumb, so a carpenter scribes trim to the wall so it fits tight, then fills nail holes, caulks, primes and paints.
Floating shelves
The wall carries a lever load, so anchoring into studs matters, and capacity drops as the shelf gets deeper. Heavy things need studs or added blocking behind the drywall.
Beetle-kill pine
It's wood from pine trees killed by the mountain pine beetle. The fungus the beetle carries stains it blue or gray, and the Colorado State Forest Service says the stain doesn't affect the wood's structural viability. Ask how dry it is, expect some checking, and seal all the edges.
Where it gets bigger
A shelf or mantel that has to carry real weight, or a wall that needs opening up for backing, can turn into structural work. Alex will say so and tell you who to call.
What it costs
There is no published price range for custom woodwork, shelves or beetle-kill pine. Alex prices it after he sees it.
