Tile

Backsplashes, tiled stairs and regrouting. Alex has filmed how he does a backsplash over wood paneling and how he installs grab bars in a tile shower.

What Alex does

  • Subway-tile backsplashes
  • Large-format tile on stairs with a wood bullnose edge
  • Regrouting
  • Grab bars in tile showers, into solid backing

What it goes on

Tile on painted drywall in a dry area works if the wall is sound and clean. Thinset doesn't grip gloss paint, so the surface is sanded and primed, and soft or damaged board is replaced. A shower wall needs a cement-type backer, not plain drywall.

Over wood paneling

The panel has to be flat, secure and stable. It doesn't work on every wall, and Alex's video shows how he handles it.

Grab bars

A grab bar has to go into solid backing, not just tile, which is why drilling through tile takes care.

Where it gets bigger

Anything that changes plumbing behind a shower wall is a licensed plumber's job.

What it costs

A basic ceramic backsplash: about $8 to $15 per square foot installed (national 2026 cost guides, 2026, national figure). Tile, Denver: one Denver guide says $5 to $10 per square foot (Homeyou, 2026, undated page). The sources disagree, so treat it as a wide band. Wall prep and pattern change it. Those are published price guides, not Alex's prices. Alex prices it after he sees it.
